The Formation of UWISRC

Do you know how many volcanoes UWISRC monitors on a daily basis?

In 2023, the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWISRC) celebrates 70 years of excellence and service to the Eastern Caribbean region in the monitoring and reporting of earthquakes and volcanic activity.

UWISRC conducts continuous volcanic and seismic hazard assessment through ongoing collaborations with 11 governments, monitoring 16 of the 19 "active" volcanoes in the region. When a volcano is classed as "active" that doesn't mean it is currently erupting, only that it could potentially erupt in the future.

The team operates a comprehensive monitoring network with over 50 seismic stations within the post-colonial resource constraints of the Eastern Caribbean. Over the last three decades, the SRC has championed a dynamic education and outreach programme supported by regional and international collaborators towards increasing stakeholder engagement and awareness of geological hazards and related risk.
