Subject

Photographs from St Vincent after the 1902 eruption of La Soufriére volcano.

Description

View to the north along the coast from the mouth of the Wallibou. Four river channels meet the sea, emerging from steep-sided valleys, terminating in flat alluvial fans; the Wallibou, the largest, occupies the foreground. The steep-sided valley walls (cliffs) form the base of relatively flat and gently sloping portions of the landscape near the coast. these flatter surfaces appear to be sparsely vegetated and incised by networks of rills which drain into the main channels. Inland and upslope, slope gradients increase and the land surface is more densely vegetated. The flanks of the volcano are visible in the background.
